Define this! (Google)

RFID? Thin client? Happenstance? Couscous? Whether you're confused by a library term or a word you haven't come across before, Google can help save the day with it's "define" search.

Enter a search like the one below,

Google define search

and you will receive a results list with links to sites that can provide a definition for your search:

Handy dandy, no?!

[Thanks to Evan for this tip!]

Find your way

In the August Tidbits, which was also a Google special edition, I mentioned using Google to find a map of a location by entering a street address in the search box. Google used to only return a link to Yahoo! Maps or Mapquest, but now they have added their own map tool.

Google Maps is in beta release at present, and I think it's one of the best mapping services out there. The maps are clean, easy to read, and easier to navigate within. Take a look at this example:

You can also fill in the directions links to get directions to the location shown from where you live. It's a great service, give it a try!

Local search in beta

Speaking of beta, Google has another new service it's trying out. Have you noticed the LOCAL link above the search box?

Google local link

If you click on the link, this is what is returned:

Google local search options

You can enter what service or business you would like to find in the first box, and then enter the place in the second box and Google will find what you're looking for and return a nice map with the results. If you check the "Remember this location" box, you'll never have to enter your city again.

This would be a nice service to recommend to people new in your area!

What's showing?

Try this search in Google: movie times appleton wisconsin (or insert your town or city name instead of appleton)

Google has a nice Showtimes feature now that will include cinemas in your area, their addresses, showtimes, reviews, and a link to the Internet Movie Database so you can find out more about each show before you go. Here's a sample:

Google movie results

You can also group the results by movie rather than by theater in case you're looking for all of the places showing a particular show.

Cool? Oh yeah.

Adieu

Farewell until next time from the library system where all the computers are fast, all the books are worth reading, and all the librarians are above average!
