RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and "is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works – such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video – in a standardized format." (Wikipedia RSS entry)

For an easy to understand explanation of RSS and how to use RSS feeds, take a look at RSS in Plain English from The Common Craft Show:

There is also some basic information about RSS on the Project Play blog (though the assignments there focus on using Bloglines rather than Google Reader).

Now that you know a little more about RSS, you'll need to choose an RSS reader so you can start subscribing to some feeds. OWLS recommends Google Reader, but Bloglines is another good option. To get started with Google Reader, take a look at another easy to understand video that Common Craft made for Google, Google Reader in Plain English:

Once you create an account for Google Reader, all you have to do is find the blogs or other sites to which you want to subscribe. More and more information from OWLS and OWLSnet is being provided in the system's blogs, so we recommend you subscribe to some or all of the following:
