Hints from OWLS: practical tips for everyday tasks

Friday, December 11, 2009, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Presenter: Rick, Dave, Gerri, Evan (Outagamie Wuapca Library System)
Location: Appleton Public Library Meeting Rooms
Sponsored by: Outagamie Waupaca Library System

One of the great things about being a librarian in the 21st century is that there is always something new to learn.  Sometimes however, with so many new technologies coming at us, it is hard to find time just to keep up with the basics. Here is a chance to learn something new and keep up with the tools you use every day.

This presentation by OWLS staff will cover a variety of practical tips and suggestions for performing tasks and using resources common to most OWLS libraries. Nothing fancy, just some of the things we do that you might find useful, like tips for managing email more effectively, how to make screen shots, and using InfoSoup features like my lists and my reading history.  We will also demo key features in Millennium, highlight resources on the OWLS and OWLSnet websites, and show how to find library related information available from the state.

It wouldn't be an OWLS presentation without at least some cool software, so we will also take look at a few popular tools that OWLS staff use frequently in their work. This will also be a great time to ask questions or share your experiences about using OWLS related tools and resources.

Presenter: Helene Blowers, Director of Digital Strategy, Columbus Metropolitan Library
Location: Online via GoToWebinar
Sponsored by: Project Play

Helene BlowersInnovation has become such a bandied word these days that in some organizations it’s now an expectation for library staff to be innovative from the ground up. So, where does “innovation” really come from? and how do you kickstart something at an organizational level that is, by its very nature, connected to the elusive waves of individual creativity? The answer: Innovation starts with “I.” This session will explore how the I, YOU, WE of organization cultures are involved in responding to the needs and desires to innovate and change.

In 2007, our presenter was named a Mover & Shaker by Library Journal as one of the 50 most influential people shaping the future of libraries. The discovery learning program, Learning 2.0: 23 Things, that she created while serving as Technology Director for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library (NC) has launched a world-wide 2.0 learning sensation and has been replicated by over 700 organizations in 15 countries, including our very own Project Play.

Ulla de Stricker addresses ways our profession's practitioners may overcome the "yawn factor" standing in the way of effective dialogue by introducing "hooks" into the way we sell our value and activities to decision makers. The competition for attention is getting ever more intense and we need to work on our messaging, adjusting for stakeholders' preferences, styles, and priorities. The good news is that decision makers are always tuned in to radio station WIIFM.

The Real Bottom Line: Myths About Using Business Principles in Libraries

Thursday, January 8, 2009, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Presenter: Pat Wagner, Co-Owner, Pattern Research, Inc.
Location: Online via Sirsi Dynix

Return on investment (or equity, or assets). Merchandising. Leveraging capacity. Bottom line strategies. Shareholders. More and more, library management meetings sound like corporate board rooms. The problem: What might work for a multi-million dollar company that produces commodities like toothpaste and canned beans might not work as well with a social institution like a library, no matter how large. However, entrepreneurs tend to run smaller businesses where fiscal responsibility, personalized customer service and innovation are the rule. Their models can help libraries better control costs, increase usage figures and attract political and financial support. Why is the neighborhood gourmet restaurant a better example for library operations than the multi-national hamburger chain?

Challenging the Assumptions of Legacy Librarianship

Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 10:00 AM - 11:15 AM

Presenters: Joan Frye Williams, Library & Information Technology Consultant; George Needham, Vice President for Member Services, OCLC
Location: Online Via OPAL Auditorium
Sponsored by: Outagamie Waupaca Library System

George and Joan“Legacy librarianship” is a term coined by presenter Joan Frye Williams to describe the fundamental truths that have been passed down through the generations of librarians – in library school, on the job, and in our professional literature.  For example, we’ve always been told that one-on-one assistance to patrons is our most valuable activity, and should be our top priority.  Have you ever wondered if these “truths” would hold up under serious scrutiny?

Many librarians simply take what they’ve always been told about patrons and their needs for granted, but the world we serve has changed, and new evidence confirms that some of our basic assumptions about library service need to change, too.  To stay relevant we must be in sync with the needs and wants of our communities, but how can we implement change when the inertia of "legacy librarianship" is a nearly irresistible force?

In this updated version of their PLA presentation, library consultant Joan Frye Williams and OCLC Vice-President George Needham will take a humorous, no-holds-barred look at recent data that challenge traditional library thinking, and will offer some surprising suggestions for re-imagining the library.  Participants will learn about:

This webinar is designed for librarians, public service and branch staff, library workers with customer service responsibilities, friends, trustees and commissioners, plus anyone with both a connection to the library community and a sense of humor.
