Presenter: Garry Golden, Futurist
Location: Appleton Public Library Meeting Rooms
Sponsored by: OWLS
Foresight and the Future of Libraries
Join academically trained Futurist Garry Golden for a workshop on understanding how libraries can learn to anticipate changes in society and technology that might have an impact on our communities and civic institutions.
The workshop will introduce three themes: Rethinking Local, Culture of Lifelong Learning, and Place-based Experiences.
We will explore the role libraries might play in supporting the groundswell of rethinking local systems (e.g. food, health, manufacturing, workforce training and education) to build a culture of resiliency against uncertain changes ahead.
We will talk about an expanding role for public libraries in a culture of lifelong learning where mastery of skills becomes critical to future success for community members.
We will consider the importance of Brick and Mortar. Yes, place still matters in the digital age! How might libraries reimagine their physical spaces to meet expectations for programs around: Creative Aging, Pop-up Architecture, Craft and Maker Spaces, Civicware Hackathons, Immersive Media environments, and Playscapes.
Garry will share leadership activities and techniques to engage your staff, Board and community to bring about change that is needed, and appropriate to your library.
We're excited to take a glimpse into the future and to hear how libraries can identify changes, explore implications and pave the way for learners in the 21st century. We hope you can join us for this workshop.

Presenter: Sarah Houghton, Librarian in Black, Assistant Director at San Rafael Public Library
Location: Online Via GoTo Meeting Webinar
Sponsored by: Co-sponsored by NFLS and OWLS
After two decades of continuous library technology increases and a budget crisis that has affected nearly every library in the world, we are left with the question: what will the library of the future look like? We have seen huge cuts in expensive brick and mortar spaces and collections, in-person services and programming, and other face-to-face library services. At the same time, we are finally realizing the high return on investment for library web, mobile, hardware, and software services. The budget crisis may force us to face our inefficiencies and drastically re-engineer our services and the way we provide those services to our customers. The legacy system is burning down all around us. What will emerge from the ashes?
Sarah Houghton is the Acting Director at the San Rafael Public Library and is best known for her blog: Librarian in Black. She was named a 2009 Library Journal Mover & Shaker as a Trendspotter.
She speaks internationally at online and realspace events for libraries and other institutions. Sarah received her MLIS from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign and an MA in Irish Literature from Washington State University.

Unprecedented Interaction: Providing Accessibility for the Disabled
Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Presenter: NISO
Location: You may attend the webinar in the Nest at OWLS or log in from your home or office. Please indicate your preference on the registration form.
Sponsored by: Outagamie Waupaca Library System, Wisconsin Library Services, NISO
About the Webinar
Digital texts are often not fully accessible to people with any of a range of print disabilities. As e-books become more mainstream, in part because of the improvements in digital reader technology, this information needs to be equally available to the print-disabled. Librarians who provide either full-text or abstracting and indexing systems to their communities of scholars, students, and the general public must ensure that these complex and rapidly-evolving resources are equitably accessible to everyone they serve. Publishers need to either provide this accessibility with their content or enable the libraries and end users to create this accessibility. This webinar will cover the current state of print accessibility standards, how standards are adopted and translated into action, and how publishers are responding to increasing customer demand for accessible information products.
Agenda
Welcome & Introduction
Todd Carpenter, Managing Director, NISO
The State of Information Resource Accessibility Standards: DAISY and WCAG
George Kerscher, Secretary General, DAISY Consortium
Learn about two of the major standards for making information resources accessible: the NISO/DAISY Digital Talking Book (DTB) standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.86) known as DAISY 3 and the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. The DTB standard is currently undergoing revision and expansion to two parts; Part A will address authoring and interchange and Part B will focus on distribution.
Collaboration with Publishers: The Institutional Response to Accessibility
Jon R. Gunderson, Coordinator of Assistive Communication and Information Technology Accessibility, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Institutions need to collaborate and partner with publishers of externally-acquired information to ensure it is accessible to the print-disabled in their community. The Illinois Center for Information Technology and Web Accessibility (iCITA) has successfully worked with publishers such as Ebsco and Elsevier to improve the accessibility of their content that the university has licensed for their students and faculty.
Opportunities and Challenges in Serving Customers with Print Disabilities: The Publisher's Response to Accessibility
Alicia Wise, Director of Universal Access, Elsevier
Publishers around the world are waking up to the opportunities, and challenges, of better serving their customers who are blind, dyslexic, or who have other viewing- or reading-related disabilities. Find out what initiatives are underway and the steps to take to begin ensuring that more of your publications are accessible.

It's Only as Good as the Metadata: Improving OpenURL and Knowledgebase Quality

Presenter: NISO
Location: You may attend the webinar in the Nest at OWLS or log in from your home or office. Please indicate your preference on the registration form.
Sponsored by: Outagamie Waupaca Library System, Wisconsin Library Services, NISO
About the Webinar
The OpenURL is inextricably entwined with modern information services supplied by, among others, libraries, resource providers, and system vendors. All of these constituents and the end users whom they serve rely on the accuracy and dependability of OpenURLs to bring information within easy reach; ideally, within two mouse clicks. But the services powered by OpenURLs can be brought low quickly by one or more errors within the citation data and/or the OpenURL encoding itself. Such errors can leave librarians mystified, resource providers puzzled, and users unhappy at a service's failure to deliver, yet they are all too common.
Is anyone keeping watch over the accuracy and dependability of OpenURLs? Are resource providers and system vendors held accountable for their applications of the OpenURL standard (ANSI/NISO Z39.88)? What can librarians do to bring these problems to the attention of their suppliers? This webinar will address these and other issues of OpenURL accuracy in both theory and practice.

Count Me In: Measuring Individual Item Usage

Presenter: NISO
Location: You may attend the webinar in the Nest at OWLS or log in from your home or office. Please indicate your preference on the registration form.
Sponsored by: Outagamie Waupaca Library System, Wisconsin Library Services, NISO
About the Webinar
Libraries' growing awareness of performance measures has created an increased interest in and desire for fine-grained usage data. For years, gathering item-level usage data has meant counting uses of the physical containers of intellectual property, e.g.: books, tapes, discs, or periodicals, to name a few. Now that electronic versions of such items inhabit a much greater percentage of many libraries' collections, including that held in their own institutional repositories, usage data about individual book chapters, journal articles, sound recordings, motion picture scenes, and so forth is within reach or is already trickling into libraries' records.
Standards initiatives such as COUNTER and SUSHI have demonstrated feasibility of expanded XML-based schemas to record and communicate more fine-grained data. Authors and funding agencies, in addition to library collection managers, are interested in better understanding the impact this usage tracking can provide. What kinds of schemas would work best to provide this? What kind of mechanisms can be created to support this without becoming unduly burdensome for data providers? What are further practical applications for the analysis of this information?

Measure, Assess, Improve, Repeat: Using Library Performance Metrics
Wednesday, September 8, 2010, 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Presenter: NISO
Location: You may attend the webinar in the Nest at OWLS or log in from your home or office. Please indicate your preference on the registration form.
Sponsored by: Outagamie Waupaca Library System, Wisconsin Library Services, NISO
About the Webinar
Increasingly, all kinds of libraries are expected not only to gather and report data about their activities but also to analyze that data and use it to evaluate their performance. Such an analysis is difficult to undertake or even begin without a framework that informs the evaluation process.
Performance metrics can assist with this difficulty but present their own sets of challenges. What performance metrics are relevant to library operations? Are performance metrics already being successfully applied in libraries? How can information standards assist with this area of growing importance to libraries, the entities they report to, and the information providers that supply them?
Practitioners of 'evidence-based librarianship' will discuss and demonstrate evaluations of library collections and services using a variety of performance metrics. Metrics, when utilized creatively, offer many far-reaching applications and opportunities for demonstration of return-on-investment and proof of a library's value to its parent institution, as well as new responsibilities to continue to show relevance.

About the Webinar
Many users assume that most information today is digital. As digital content increases, so does the information resources that are produced, consumed, and distributed in physical formats. Resource sharing of physical formats—whether books, DVDs, CDs, or audiocassettes—continues to play an important role in library services. Moving library materials between libraries has been a hidden component of resource sharing activities. Numerous activities have focused on improving resource sharing workflow, but little attention has been paid to how materials are moved from one library to another, and from a library directly to a patron (e.g., to a home or office). The issues around how to deliver library materials quickly, securely, and cost-effectively are equally immense. What are the best ways to provide physical delivery of library materials? In this webinar you will hear from three speakers. The first speaker will first provide an overview of library delivery services today; the second speaker will discuss the charge, current work plan and emerging recommended practices of NISO’s Physical Delivery of Library Resources Working Group; and the final speaker will talk about efforts to provide a delivery service directly to library patrons.

Todd Carpenter, NISO Managing Director
12:15-1:15 p.m.: Presentations
ISO Standard on RFID in Libraries
Existing RFID standards define technical aspects of the tag and the air interface but what is still needed to ensure interoperability in a library environment is a standard that specifices what data needs to be on the tag and how it is formatted and encoded. The ISO standard on RFID in Libraries (ISO/DIS 28560) is nearing its final stage of approval. This three-part standard specifies a data model for the use of RFID tags for items appropriate for the needs of all types of libraries, including academic, public, corporate, special and school, and defines two different encodings that can be used.
U.S. Implementation of RFID in Libraries
In 2008, knowing that an international standard was still a couple years off, a NISO working group developed a recommended practice on RFID in U.S. Libraries (NISO RP6-2008). Experiences using this recommended practice in the U.S. will be discussed as well as plans for updating the document to align it with the forthcoming international standard.
Case Study of RFID Library Implementation
When implementing RFID in a library environment, there are certainly the typical issues of transitioning to a new technology and interoperability with current systems. But RFID implementations also encounter other "cultural" issues such as privacy concerns and the move to a more self-service type of model for library patrons. This case study will share the experiences of a library that was one of the earlier adopters of the RFID technology.

Hints from OWLS: practical tips for everyday tasks

One of the great things about being a librarian in the 21st century is that there is always something new to learn. Sometimes however, with so many new technologies coming at us, it is hard to find time just to keep up with the basics. Here is a chance to learn something new and keep up with the tools you use every day.
This presentation by OWLS staff will cover a variety of practical tips and suggestions for performing tasks and using resources common to most OWLS libraries. Nothing fancy, just some of the things we do that you might find useful, like tips for managing email more effectively, how to make screen shots, and using InfoSoup features like my lists and my reading history. We will also demo key features in Millennium, highlight resources on the OWLS and OWLSnet websites, and show how to find library related information available from the state.
It wouldn't be an OWLS presentation without at least some cool software, so we will also take look at a few popular tools that OWLS staff use frequently in their work. This will also be a great time to ask questions or share your experiences about using OWLS related tools and resources.

Return on investment (or equity, or assets). Merchandising. Leveraging capacity. Bottom line strategies. Shareholders. More and more, library management meetings sound like corporate board rooms. The problem: What might work for a multi-million dollar company that produces commodities like toothpaste and canned beans might not work as well with a social institution like a library, no matter how large. However, entrepreneurs tend to run smaller businesses where fiscal responsibility, personalized customer service and innovation are the rule. Their models can help libraries better control costs, increase usage figures and attract political and financial support. Challenging the Assumptions of Legacy Librarianship

Presenters: Joan Frye Williams, Library & Information Technology Consultant; George Needham, Vice President for Member Services, OCLC
Location: Online Via OPAL Auditorium

“Legacy librarianship” is a term coined by presenter Joan Frye Williams to describe the fundamental truths that have been passed down through the generations of librarians – in library school, on the job, and in our professional literature. For example, we’ve always been told that one-on-one assistance to patrons is our most valuable activity, and should be our top priority. Have you ever wondered if these “truths” would hold up under serious scrutiny?

To stay relevant we must be in sync with the needs and wants of our communities, but how can we implement change when the inertia of "legacy librarianship" is a nearly irresistible force?
In this updated version of their PLA presentation, library consultant Joan Frye Williams and OCLC Vice-President George Needham will take a humorous, no-holds-barred look at recent data that challenge traditional library thinking, and will offer some surprising suggestions for re-imagining the library. Participants will learn about:
