What is OPAL?

Online Programming for All Libraries (OPAL) is a collaborative effort by libraries to provide web-based programs for library users and staff.

OWLS OPAL "meeting room" provides an online gathering place where members can communicate via text chatting, synchronized browsing, and voice-over-IP.

Where is the OWLS OPAL meeting room?

The OPAL meeting room is available at http://www.conference321.com/masteradmin/room.asp?id=rs269d91c8bf06. You'll need to install some software the first time you visit our room. Once the software is installed on your computer, click on the orange "Click here to enter the room" button. Enter your name and ignore the password field. No password is needed to participate in an OPAL session.

How do I use the meeting room?

The OPAL web site provides general instructions for using an OPAL Online Meeting Room. Most presenters will also give a brief introduction that includes instructions on speaking, text chatting, and following along with slides.

Hardware and software requirements

Before you attend your first OPAL session, you will need to install a small plug-in on your computer. Go to the meeting room, click "Download Here," and follow the instructions. Once you download the plugin, you'll need to install it. Help and documentation is also available on the OPAL Online web site.

OPAL seems to work best in Internet Explorer. If your browser of preference is Firefox, you may need to follow some additional steps in order to associate the downloaded plugin with the correct application. Visit our Firefox & OPAL help page for more information.

Your PC will need working speakers and a microphone to participate in the voice-over-IP discussion. If you do not have a microphone, you can still participate via chat.

If you have additional questions about OPAL, please contact Beth.
