Training

Check the Computer Lab Classes page for dates and times for 'Casting Kit Come & Play sessions. Beth will also do one-on-one training when equipment is picked up, if needed.

Purpose of this Service

On December 21, 2007 OWLS’ Library Services and Technology Act grant application, “Enhancing Library Services via Podcasts, Screencasts, and Vodcasts” was approved for funding in the amount of $9,327. The funds were used to purchase software and equipment to enable OWLS staff and OWLS member libraries to create and share podcasts, screencasts, and vodcasts with the public.

Part of the grant included the creation of a ‘Casting Kit that will circulate to member libraries to enable them to create their own podcasts, screencasts, or vodcasts. The Kit will enable member libraries to move traditional library services and programming to the web, thereby extending their resources outside the physical walls of their buildings, reaching patrons who are either unable to attend programs when scheduled or who prefer to attend “virtually.”

How To Request Equipment

2. Submit a request via our online form.
3. Your request will be confirmed or denied via email or phone by Beth.

The Equipment

For Podcasts

• Laptop with editing software (Audacity, ePodcast Producer)
• Blue Snowball microphone (best for recording meetings/group sessions)
• Sennheiser headset with microphone (best for recording one voice when sitting at a computer)
• Olympus portable voice recorder (best for recording on the fly – e.g. interviews, lectures, presentations where visuals aren’t required)
  

For Screencasts

• Laptop with editing software (Camtasia)
• Sennheiser headset with microphone to record voiceover

For Vodcasts

• Laptop with editing software (Audacity, Camtasia, Windows Movie Maker)
• Sennheiser headset with microphone to record voiceover
• Sony camcorder (best for recording programs where visuals are helpful or making longer promotional videos)
• Tripod for Sony camcorder
• Wireless microphone system for Sony camcorder (handy for recording presentations & programs)
• Flip video camera (best for recording informal, short videos - very portable and easy to use)
