Digital Cameras

I have been asked a few questions about purchasing digital cameras lately, so I thought I would post some information here in case more people are interested.

If you're going to be using the camera to capture images to post on your web site, simply look for a camera that can capture at least 640 x 480 pixels. Resolution isn't all that important for posting images on a web site. This means that just about any digital camera out there will do just fine.

Things you should consider: size, storage capacity, and battery life.

Size: how big is the camera?
If you want to be able to take it with you to events, select one of the new slim cameras that you can slip into any bag or pocket.

Storage capacity: how many images can you save to the storage device at any given time?
The more pixels in a digital image, the larger the file will be. For example, the average medium quality image is about 980,000 bytes. Many digital cameras use smart cards from 8 MB and up, so on an 8 MB card you could only save approximately 8 images. You may be saving money on a less expensive camera, but will you have to spend more to purchase adequate storage space? Watch out!

Battery life: does the camera use rechargeable batteries?
You'd be surprised how quickly a digital camera can drain batteries. Make sure you get one that can use rechargeable batteries.

Some other nice features to look for are a zoom lens and carrying case.

If you want to use your digital camera for more than just posting images on your web site, you'll want to consider purchasing a camera that can capture images at a higher resolution than 640 x 480.

To learn more about digital cameras and digital photography (including product reviews), go to Digital Photography Review. If this site seems overwhelming, try this:

  1. Go to your local vendor and see what digital cameras they are selling.
  2. Write down the models and prices.
  3. Go to Digital Photography Review and do a side by side comparison of the cameras you can buy locally.

This will allow you to compare the features of the available models and may give you a better idea of which one you will want to purchase. You may also want to read A Short Course in Choosing a Digital Camera. (The ShortCourses web site has loads of information about digital cameras and digital photography!)

Image Editing Software

If your digital camera doesn't include free image editing software, I recommend that you purchase Adobe Photoshop Elements. It costs just under $100 and will allow you to crop, tweak, and stylize any image. Better yet, it's supported by me so you'll always have help!

If you have any questions about digital cameras or image editing software, please give me a call.
